Admissions

Determined Admission Arrangements

All admission authorities must determine admission arrangements by 28 February every year, even if they have not changed from previous years and a consultation has not been required.

Admissions Numbers

As part of determining their admission arrangements, Magnus Academy must set an admission number for each year group where students will normally be admitted. As a secondary academy, with a sixth form, this is Year 7 and Year 12.

For years 8-11, we have published a working admission number, as admitting further children to these year groups would prejudice the efficient provision of education and use of resources.

Please see details below for the academic year 2024-2025:
Year 7 – published admission number: 180
Year 8 – working admission number: 120
Year 9 – working admission number: 120
Year 10 – working admission number: 120
Year 11 – working admission number: 120
Year 12 – published admission number: 100

Ethos Statement

Magnus Church of England Academy is a Christian community that places emphasis on creating a culture of respect, trust and support. We care about and invest in our communities and each other. Our values are:
Determination, Integrity, Ambition, Humility, Compassion.

We have high aspirations for all members of our school community.
We are an inclusive school.
We believe in the pursuit of excellence.

We welcome applications from all members of the community.

The Academy welcomes applications for admission in September of each year in line with the timelines in Nottinghamshire County Council’s coordinated scheme for children transferring from Primary Schools at age 11+. Parents should apply on a common application form through their own ‘home’ local authority. The Nottinghamshire County Council form can be found at http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/education/school-admissions/apply-for-a-school-place.

The number of places available is 180. If more applications are received by the published closing date than there are places available, then the over subscription criteria listed in the determined arrangements for that academic year will apply.

Sixth Form Arrangements

The admission limit for external students in the intake year is 40.

Applications to the Sixth Form are welcome from all applicants meeting the basic academic requirements as outlined in the academy’s sixth form prospectus and is not restricted to students from the Magnus Church of England Academy.

The Sixth Form aims to accommodate a wide range of subject choices. However, if the number of places available in a given subject is less than the number of students wishing to take that subject, then the over subscription criteria will be applied.

Over subscription criteria for students who meet the minimum entrance requirements are the same as above, but without item number 2. Distance is measured as the crow flies from the student’s home address to the main gate on Earp Avenue, measured using Nottinghamshire County Council’s computerised distance measuring software.

In-Year Admissions

Applications for in-year admissions will be processed in line with Nottinghamshire County Council’s in-year coordinated scheme. In the event of a place being available in the appropriate year group, then that will be offered. If no places are available the application will be refused and you will be given the right to appeal. Waiting lists are not held for in-year applications. Information about how to apply for in-year school places is available at https://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/education/school-admissions/changing-school

Once you have applied for your place via Nottinghamshire County Council and discussed your child’s admission to Magnus Academy you will need to provide all of your child’s details using the Magnus Academy In Year Application Form

Children of UK service personnel

The Academy will allocate a place in advance of the family arriving in the area provided the application is accompanied by an official letter that declares a relocation date and a Unit postal address or quartering area address when considering their application against the over subscription criteria.

Waiting List

In the event of over subscription, and where an application has been refused, the academy will operate a waiting list in line with Local Authority arrangements. A child’s place on the waiting list will be determined by the above criteria and may go up or down depending on whether places become available or if late or mid-term applications are received. The academy will administer the waiting list for the duration of the coordinated admissions scheme, i.e. the end of the Autumn Term.

Withdrawing an offer of a place

Any offers of a place found to be made on the basis of inaccurate information can be withdrawn. Such examples would indicate fraudulent application, intentionally misleading applications, a false claim to residence and the failure of a parent to respond to an offer of a place within 14 days.

Appeals

Right of Appeal Under the terms of the School Admissions Appeals Code 2012, if you apply for and are refused a place at Magnus Church of England Academy you have the right to appeal.

Admission Appeals at SNMAT academies are managed by Nottinghamshire County Council Appeals Team, who provide an independent appeals process.

If you decide that you wish to proceed with an appeal, you should within 20 school days of the date of the refusal letter complete the online form on Nottinghamshire County Council’s website:- https://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/education/school-admissions/appeal-a-school-admission-decision/before-you-complete-an-appeal-form

For parents/carers who are unable to use the online form, a printed form can requested from NCC’s customer contact centre – 0300 500 80 80. Appeals at SNMAT academies will be heard by an Independent Appeals Panel in accordance with the School Admissions Code 2021, The School Admissions Appeals Code 2012 and Part 3 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998.
