At Magnus we believe in developing students’ character so they are ready for the tests of life and not solely for a life of tests. The Magnus Curriculum for Life ensures students are prepared for the challenges of life that extend beyond the classroom. Every student each week has a Character Education Values, Careers, and PSHE session that both promote British Values and life skills as part of personal development.
Our comprehensive enrichment programme is designed to enhance life skills through problem solving, teamwork, independent thinking, leadership and public speaking. Students experience one enrichment session per week where they can choose from unique activities such as Museums of the World, astrophysics and Greek Mythology. We also have a partnership with Newark Rowing Club in which students can choose to get involved with as part of enrichment.
We offer a wide variety of extra-curricular activities where students can get involved with groups such as sports teams, the famous Magnus Swing Band and the annual school production. The Energy Efficient Club is supported by the University of Birmingham and our Mandarin Excellence Program is supported by the University College London.
Students enjoy outdoor and adventurous activities through our Big Days and residential experiences – including our very popular ski trip, humanities trips to Paris, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and our own Combined Cadet Forced which students can join from year 9.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme gives students the chance to experience nature through self-guided expeditions involving map reading, camping and cooking outdoors. Participants also develop their abilities in a physical activity, take part in a new or existing skill and help their community through volunteering.
The Magnus CCF (RAF), unique in Newark, provides rare opportunities for students such as adventure training camps and air experience flights with an experienced RAF pilot. Training enables cadets to develop a sense of personal responsibility, leadership, and confidence as well as instilling self-discipline and resourcefulness.
