Cadets Parade for Armed Forces Day

On Sunday, our Cadets paraded in Newark for Armed Forces Day. We’re extremely proud of their involvement and have received a lovely message from the Chairman, Newark Armed Forces Day Working Group 2023, WG CDR N G BRANSTON MBE RAF.

“My sincere thanks for the significant contribution made by the cadets of the Magnus Academy’s CCF on Sunday’s Newark Armed Forces Day parade. The participation of your cadets was impressive, and contributed significantly to the overall cadet forces present, and thus to the appearance and performance of the entire event. I have already received numerous very positive comments from members of the public (including quite a lot I didn’t even know). The Lord Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire was certainly extremely impressed – indeed, he specifically mentioned in his speech how good it was to see the CCF on this parade for the first time. The Town Mayor and other civic dignitaries involved, especially those who helped us with the inspection, also commented very favourably.

I was personally very proud of all the staff and cadets, and am grateful for the enthusiasm with which you and your cadets greeted the opportunity to be seen on the larger stage of AFD; you should all be very proud. Please pass on these expressions of gratitude to all those who were involved.

I hope you will be able to continue to support this annual event. I know that Kevin Winter, who will be Chairman next year for the Navy lead, will be grateful for all the help he can get.”

Goodbye Year 11

Today we said farewell to our wonderful year 11 students with shirt signing, ice cream and a leavers assembly. Mr Etheridge shared stories from the last 5 years and handed out awards before students were treated to the obligatory video full of photos from their time at Magnus! They were also handed back letters they wrote to themselves from year 7.

It wouldn’t be a Magnus leavers event without a musical performance from Mrs Martin and SLT, so at the request of year 11 themselves, this year Magnus SLT became the Spice Girls.

Thank you from everyone at Magnus Academy for being such a brilliant group of young people. We wish you all the best of luck for the future in whatever you may do!

Matilda Jr the musical wows audiences

Performances of Matilda the musical wows audiences at Magnus C of E Academy

Magnus Church of England Academy students have performed Matilda the musical for their friends and families, in addition to special performances for local primary school children.

Leanne Phillips is Primary & Community Liaison Officer at Magnus C of E Academy and she said, “It has been 5 years since our last school production and Matilda was the perfect choice for our first show. Matilda is so relatable to our students, and because of the release of the new film, they were really able to delve into their characters.”

The show’s complexity meant that students had to work like a professional theatre company said Leanne. “We have been rehearsing for 7 months and what a fun filled and action-packed time it has been preparing for the show. We created our own production company; the crew created the set design and sorted the props, and we had a student working with our lighting and sound engineer. We are so impressed by their effort, enthusiasm, and dedication to the show.”

Student, Poppy Goodwin, (Year 7) played Matilda and said, “I am not usually nervous about performing and go to a club after school where I have gained some experience. I would say there might be some nerves right before a show because there have been lot of lines to learn, songs and performance pieces, and it’s a lot to remember! But I was sure that we would all do our best and we have worked very hard in rehearsals. I have been really looking forward to it for a while.” Fellow student Jennifer Cragg (Year 10) played the role of Miss Trunchbull and said, “I found it’s been hard to focus and learn my lines fully, but it’s all been worth it. I have made lots of new friends while we have been rehearsing and learning the songs together, and it has been a lot of fun. I haven’t done much in the way of performing before and was quite nervous about performing in front of the primary children the most. I know from my work as a Young Cub Leader that children can be brutally honest!”

Leanne Phillips said the show’s success has led to new plans. “We have received some incredible feedback from our audiences. We are so proud of how hard the cast and crew worked, and we are already planning our next production!”

Family and friends were welcomed to one sell-out performance, and a second with only a few seats to spare. Local primary schools who enjoyed the performances were Sir Donald Bailey Academy and Barnby Road Academy.

Parent Governor Vacancy

Y11 & P16 Parents’ Evening – 30/01/23

Year 11 and Post 16 Parents’ Evening is taking place on Monday 30th January from 4pm to 7pm in the Academy’s main hall. You are able to book appointments using SchoolCloud from 4pm on Monday 16th January. A letter with more information, along with a guide on how to book appointments is attached.
