Magnus celebrates fantastic A Level results!

Magnus Church of England Academy is celebrating fantastic A Level results as the school sees a 100% pass rate in A* to E grades.

Principal for the last year, Anna Martin, has overseen a series of positive changes resulting in rapid improvement at the school and says this demonstrates that future students no longer need to look outside of the town to take A Levels. “I am delighted with the improvements in the A level results this year. It is really encouraging for staff and students to see the rewards of all the hard work that they have put in.  There has been a real step change particularly at the top end with 67% of all grades in the A* – B grade range and on average students have achieved a grade higher than this time last year.”

Close friends Courtney Haywood and Amber Nicholson, both aged 18, pursued a similar path to each other studying for their A levels in early years education. Both girls have been given the opportunity to start as teaching assistants at the Lover’s Lane Primary School in Newark from September.

Courtney (who gained a Distinction* in Health and Social Care and a Distinction*, in Child Care) explained; “I was shocked by my final results, but I have to say we were both given a lot of support and assistance from staff at Magnus and we will miss them terribly.”

Amber (who gained a Distinction* in Health and Social Care and a Distinction* in Child Care) commented; “I was very surprised – I did better than I expected. I am so pleased as I especially want to work with primary age children. I would also highly recommend that students look towards studying A level at the Magnus Academy sixth form.”

Magnus student Regan Pickering (18yrs) achieved a B in Business, B in Psychology and C in History and had confirmation this morning of a place at Nottingham Trent University to study economics. “I was reasonably confident about what I would get in business and psychology, but I was amazed at my result in history which I thought would be a significantly lower grade,” said Regan. “All the staff at the Magnus C of E Academy have been brilliant throughout my A level studies with one or two teachers even replying to emails at 1am in the morning! I am very pleased to be given a place at Nottingham where I hope to pursue a career in the region of business or possibly finance,” he added.

Today’s results are the best ever progress for year 13’s at the school with an overall A*-E pass rate of 100% and 67% of those achieving A*-B. The A Level only results saw another 100% pass rate and 27% A*-B. The schools Applied General results saw another 100% pass rate with 86% achieving a Distinction or higher.

Reports show that 92% of Magnus A Level students are now going on to higher education or employment. Principal Anna Martin says, “All of our students have secure plans for next year including University and full-time employment. For those attending University, the majority were able to secure their first choice University course due to their grades and I wish all our students every blessing and success as they begin the next chapter of their lives.”

Martin O’Connell, Chair of Governors at the Magnus Academy said that results are tangible evidence of the rapid improvements taking place.  “We are delighted with today’s results.  They clearly demonstrate that the changes we have made to the way we provide 6th form education are having a massively positive impact on results.  The improvement in our value added score is extraordinary and the vast majority of our students have been accepted into the university of their choice.

“We are excited for the future of our 6th form as well.  These results give us a solid platform to continue the progress we have made and we are proud to be able to say that, if you are looking for top class 6th form education, you don’t have to leave Newark to find it.”
